See our thoughts on planning a destination wedding in Portugal…
Since introducing economic reforms earlier in the decade, Portugal’s tourism industry has been thriving. And, with that, we’ve seen an increase in those wanting a destination wedding in Portugal.
In 2019, alone, it’s estimated that some 24 million visitors chose to visit this once-hidden gem. That’s more than double the population of the entire country!
And who can blame them?!
Here at Evoke, we’ve long-considered Portugal the “California of Europe,” with its warm southern beaches, fertile northern hillsides, bountiful found & wine industries, and temperate climate across most of the country.
Location choices for a destination wedding in Portugal
As the rest of the world has woken up to this fact over the last few years, Portugal has become a hotspot for destination weddings in Europe. In fact, since 2016, four Evoke Design & Creative clients have had a destination wedding in Portugal!
From north to south, Portugal has so much to offer.
Its capital city of Lisbon is rich in history and features a rejuvenated “Baixa” neighborhood, located along the Tagus River. The hilly city offers breathtaking views from every angle, along with tasty treats and lively streets.
With new, or renovated, hotels scattered throughout the city of nearly 3 million, you and your guests can get lost among the winding streets before returning to your luxurious accommodations late-night.
For couples interested in a destination wedding in Portugal surrounded by vineyards, Porto and the nearby Douro Valley are a no-brainer. Known for the fortified wine that took its name, the city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Stunning bridges span the Douro River which splits the city, making sunsets there unlike in any other city we can think of.
From there, you’re only a short & scenic drive (or romantic train ride) away, are some of the most memorable vineyards in the world. No matter if you’re a fan of red, white or green, you’re sure to find your next favorite wine here.
And, for those of you more into warm beaches and desert vibes, the Algarve region along the mouth of the Mediterranean can satisfy all of your urges.
Our team has planned weddings or events from top to bottom, and we’d love to help you think through your dream destination wedding in Portugal.
