The EVOKE team is ecstatic about their recent design being featured on the cover of Washingtonian Bride and Groom. Jill Hudson Neal says “I’m also loving the “From Paris with Love” feature in this current issue. A few months ago, I hatched a plan. I’d call several of our area’s best wedding vendors and give them a project: to design a wedding reception table around an international city. In other words, give our readers an idea of what Paris, Moscow, Havana, or Beijing would “feel” like if a just-married couple took that busy metropolis as the inspiration for their reception. Super-planners Andre Wells, Pam Barefoot, Maria Cooke, Jodi Moraru, and their respective teams more than rose to the occasion on that shoot. Stunning all around!” The EVOKE team design derived from a Doctor Zhivago-inspired reception room. Partners that helped execute the entire project were EDGE Floral, Arney Walker Calligraphy, Fancy Cakes by Leslie, Occasions Catering, Wildflower Linen and Party Rental, Ltd. EVOKE’s tip: “We suggest booking room blocks in at least two hotels to give your guests options,” says Tavares.

EVOKE’s tip: “Be sure to book a photographer and videographer you have a connection with,” says Tavares.

EVOKE’s tip: “Decide if you’ll be providing transportation for out-of-town guests,” says Tavares. “If so, be sure to include it on the invitation.”

EVOKE’s tip: “We suggest each speech being less than five minutes,” says Tavares.

EVOKE’s tip: “We truly recommend having a planner for at least the day of your wedding. That way, you can truly relax,” says Tavares.

Introducing EVOKE’s New Corporate Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD- Having experienced unprecedented growth in both sales, and staff EVOKE has outgrown its current office space and is moving into a bigger space located in Silver Spring, MD. On Sunday, November 7, The Washington, DC Chapter of the National Association of Catering Executives—the area’s oldest and largest association of caterers and event planners—honored local industry professionals in its first annual DC NACE Awards. The NACE Spirit Award (which recognizes NACE members whose commitment and compassion towards humanitarianism makes a profound and recognizeable impact) was given to Jeannette Tavares of EVOKE Event Planning. The National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) Greater Washington DC Chapter held their annual gala fundraiser on November 7, 2010 at PhotoGroup in Silver Spring, Maryland. As wedding season is upon us, the girls of EVOKE sometimes turn to the sweet treats to help get us through our particularly “challenging” days. Sometimes it’s the oh, so, popular cupcake prepared 937 ways, or perhaps a “man cookie” from Leslie Poyourow at Fancy Cakes… Afterall, I can’t think of much that two gargantuan chocolate chip cookies held together by rich chocolately ganache can’t fix!? BUT! I have a feeling there is a new dessert in town ready to fix bad days, good days, birthdays, holidays and any other day that ends in “y”.

The Whoopie Pie. I know… it’s not really a new dessert at all, but I think it is about to hit the event market with a big bang! I personally enjoy the traditional Amish version: classic chocolate cakes with it’s little pillow of marshmallow cream filling oozing from the sides. But, here at EVOKE we like to think outside of the box. Take something you know and love and take it to the next level, make it exciting and special! How about a “Make Your Own Whoopie Pie” Bar. Choose your cakes, choose your fillings and off you go! Add some sprinkles, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, chopped nuts and kosher salt for an extra added flare! Or maybe you introduce this typically sweet treat during your cocktail hour with a savory version instead… I can’t think of any man that wouldn’t love a Jalapeno Cornbread Whoopie Pie with Bacon and Chive Goat Cheese filling.

Whatever you choose to put you in a happy place, whether it’s sweet or savory or a little of both, I hope you enjoy playing with your food as much as we do. Try some of our favorite combinations!
